Anticipating your reservation three months before departure is no longer enough to obtain significant discounts, according to a study.
Fancy a weekend in Lisbon, Rome or Porto during the upcoming Christmas holidays? Even though these are not very far away destinations, going there by plane will cost you a lot of money.
We know that the prices of plane tickets from France have been rising chronically for almost two years. In question, the rise in oil prices, the resumption of traffic with the fierce desire to travel, and the objective of airlines to replenish cash following the black page of Covid.
Thus, for a departure made between December 23 and 30, the average increase over one year is 20/25% (prices observed on November 14) according to figures communicated to the Parisian by the Liligo platform.
+20 to 25% on average over one year
For example, the price of a flight to Lisbon is 94% more expensive than six months ago (273 euros, compared to 141) and 40% more expensive than a year ago. For Rome, the increase over six months reached 66% (233 euros, compared to 140) or even 64% for Istanbul.
Same thing for long-haul with prices to New York up 17% compared to six months ago. For Saint-Denis de la Réunion, the average annual increase rises to 38% (1,298 euros, compared to 941).
We might say that this outbreak is logical a month before a vacation period. But still according to Liligo, anticipating your reservation no longer seems to protect the consumer from high prices in the air.
Anticipating, the French have got into the habit of it, according to the search engine which estimates the number of searches on its platform at +18% three months before departure.
But the companies seem to have integrated this parameter. In reality, to obtain a real competitive price, you must now do so at least six months in advance, once more according to Liligo.
Example with Rome, six months before departure, you can obtain a reduction of 46% compared to a ticket booked one month before departure (138 euros, compared to 201) but the reduction is only 8% three months before .
For Lisbon, a ticket purchased six months before departure costs on average 136 euros (78% less than the same ticket purchased one month before departure) and 188 euros three months before, a reduction of only 28 %.
To get the best price, you must now book 6 months in advance
Buying a ticket to New York six months before departure allows you to obtain a reduction of 16% compared to the same ticket booked one month before departure (574 euros, compared to 664) but that is only 6% three months before .
“In the majority of cases, booking 6 months in advance is preferred to travel cheaper,” summarizes Guillaume Rostand, spokesperson for Liligo.
However, there are counterexamples which confirm the rule. “We have to be careful on a case-by-case basis. We have seen this in particular with Marrakech and Montreal, which unlike other destinations, the closer the departure date, the less expensive the ticket. As for Barcelona, we must not anticipate too much , nor do it at the last minute to get the best price,” he continues.
In short, it’s becoming more and more complicated to get your hands on affordable plane fares. Especially since price increases are expected to continue with the obligation for companies to use clean fuels, massive renewals of aircraft fleets and the prospect of a new tax in France to finance rail in particular. .
