Strasbourg Hospital Deploys Mobile Health Unit to Reduce Ambulance Wait Times: A Response to Overcrowded Emergency Services

For the first time, the Strasbourg hospital is deploying a mobile health unit in front of the emergency department of the New Civil Hospital on Friday December 22. The objective is to limit waiting time for emergency vehicles. The structure, a prefab is a non-medical unit. It is intended to accommodate eight patients while awaiting medical treatment and thus free up emergency vehicles. The sick will be under the supervision of a firefighter nurse.

Tense situation

The management of Strasbourg university hospitals (HUS) specifies that the structure is not intended to be perpetuated. This is an exceptional situation since the HUS is facing a very tense situation at the end of December, due to the epidemic of bronchiolitis in infants, influenza, Covid and other respiratory viruses which require hospitalizations, lack of beds in the departments due to a lack of staff.

The Regional Health Agency triggered the white plan in all Alsatian hospitals on Thursday, December 14. The HUS launched an internal appeal to deprogramming of non-urgent medical activities. For the moment, staff on leave have not been recalled.
