Strasbourg: here are three things that are changing in school canteens this back to school

This Monday, September 2, on the occasion of the start of the school year, Jeanne Barseghian, EELV mayor of Strasbourg, held a press conference during which she presented new developments concerning the canteens of the primary schools of the city.

Updated solidarity pricing

The elected official notably mentioned a ” updating of solidarity pricing ” regarding the prices of canteens. “We have reviewed the thresholds and the brackets for allow less well-off families to benefit from more attractive prices“, explained Ms. Barseghian. Concretely, “on the canteen bill, there will be a Price drop for 65% of families” she assured.

The highest rate will not increase, while the lowest rate will be reduced by 10 cents and free education will remain for families with no income, which concerns around 800 children in Strasbourg.

Artisanal bread in the canteen

In addition, the City has entered into a partnership with the Federation of bakeries of Bas-Rhin to be able to offer pain artisanal on the menu of the canteens. “The idea is to create groups of bakers by district so that they can supply the surrounding schools,” explains Antoine Neumann, municipal councilor delegated in charge of primary school catering. Until then, bread was supplied by the large central kitchens that supply the Strasbourg canteens. It was therefore industrial bread.

For this 2024 return to school, the initiative is limited to a part of the city, which includes the city center, the Esplanade district, Robertsau and the Conseil des XV district. It should be generalized by 2026.

A fitted kitchen for the Jean-Mentelin school group

Finally, it is a first for Strasbourg: the new Jean-Mentelin school group in Koenigshoffen benefits from a canteen with integrated kitchenIn other words, meals are prepared on site.

Children will have to wait before they can fully benefit from it, however, as its inauguration has been slightly delayed. Initially planned for this fall, it will finally take place after the All Saints’ Day holidays.
