(Keystone-ATS) The environmentalist town hall of Strasbourg announced on Tuesday the establishment of “criteria” that exhibitors will have to respect to access the Christmas market. An approach which aims to enable “renewal” among the more than 300 chalets.

According to the new specifications in force for the 2025 edition, exhibitors will be rated on five points: experience, product quality, ecological balance, inclusion and creativity, detailed during a press conference Guillaume Libsig, deputy in charge of Christmas market.

“We have been working for more than three years to make ‘Strasbourg Capital of Christmas’ an event that can be authentic, warm, magical” but “also bears values (…) of solidarity and sharing”, explained the EELV mayor, Jeanne Barseghian. The market must be “in tune with the challenges of our time”, she argued.

The notes, indicative for the 2024 edition which will begin on November 27, will allow exhibitors to know how they position themselves and what points they need to improve before the final implementation of the new system for the 2025 edition.

These criteria will make it possible to draw up “a ranking of the best applications” and to ensure “perhaps a little rotation (…), renewal”, explained Mr. Libsig. An “advisory committee” will thus replace the old “selection commission”, which operated in a “slightly network” mode according to him.

No taboo products

Ms. Barseghian also refuted the hypothesis of “taboo products” on the stands, while the leak at the end of 2022 of a list of products prohibited or sold “subject to reservation” had sparked controversy. “There are no taboo products, there are criteria and requirements,” she insisted.

Also questioned regarding the attendance which continues to increase – the 2023 edition broke all records with 3.3 million visitors – Ms. Barseghian agreed that it was necessary to “work on the regulation”, without “putting filter dams.”

The prefect of Bas-Rhin, Josiane Chevalier, raised last week in an interview with Latest News from Alsace the possibility of limiting access to Alsatian Christmas markets for security reasons.
