Stranded Ski Bus: Surviving a 16-Hour Snowstorm Ordeal in Colorado

A bus carrying 50 skiers was stranded on the highway overnight Wednesday evening because of a snowstorm that buried part of Colorado.

The passengers, mostly retirees or mothers of school-going children, had to wait 16 hours on the bus which brought them back from their last day of skiing of the season, to the Vail ski resort, reported the Colorado Sun.

The skiers, who have taken this bus every winter Wednesday for years, did not let it demoralize them, but were impatient to leave.

“We’re in good spirits,” said Mary Wagner, one of the skiers. “But we’re fed up now.”

The bus headed back Wednesday around 3:30 p.m., but barely 10 minutes after departure, the mishaps began. The snow was already falling when the vehicle had to stop because of a stationary car.

When the bus tried to restart, the transmission overheated on an uphill grade. A tow truck towed the vehicle to drop it off a little further away. The bus therefore continued its journey until 11:30 p.m., for a change of driver.

Just 30 minutes later, east of Idaho Springs, the storm took over all vehicles and the entire highway came to a halt. As of Thursday morning, the bus operated by Arrow Stage Lines had still not moved.

“It’s been 16 hours and we have no indication of a possible movement or departure,” said one of the skiers. “The toilets are full and we are almost out of water.”

A lucky few were able to take advantage of double seats to rest, but most of the skiers had to make do with a single seat during their interminable wait, albeit in the comfort of the heater.
