Sanctioned Boeings go on strike Hundreds of Russian vacationers are stranded in Antalya

With the Russian attack on Ukraine, severe sanctions on Western aviation come into force. Nevertheless, airlines such as Red Wings continued to use their Boeing machines to fly Russian passengers on vacation. But now the technology is failing in several planes.

More than 400 Russian vacationers have been stuck in Turkey for at least 48 hours because their planes are on strike. “Two out of three available Boeing 777s in our fleet are out of service for technical reasons and have to remain on the ground,” says one opinion the responsible Russian airline Red Wings. Several video recordings from Antalya show a crowded terminal in which dozens of people are waiting for their departure and are apparently irritably discussing with the airport staff.

According to the “Moscow Times” the Russian vacationers should fly back from Antalya to Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains on Saturday. Since then, however, their flights have been postponed several times and without giving reasons. As announced by Red Wings, an additional plane has now been chartered to bring more passengers from Yekaterinburg to Antalya. On the return flight, some of the stranded vacationers are to be flown back to Russia.

As the “Moscow Times” further reports, one of the two defective Boeing 777s is currently being repaired in Moscow. The other machine is therefore already on site in Antalya, but cannot start due to a defective engine. The local web portal E1.ru from Yekaterinburg reports that three passengers collapsed while waiting for hours at the airport in the Turkish holiday metropolis. Other Russian vacationers report that they were promised a transfer to stay at a hotel, but no buses came to pick them up.

Sanctions paralyze planes

According to the Moscow Times, sanctions are being held responsible for the failure of the two Boeing 777s by Red Wings. Since the attack on Ukraine, the Russian aviation sector has been one of the economic sectors that has been sanctioned most severely: two out of three civil aircraft are from Western production. However, Western aircraft manufacturers such as Airbus and Boeing are no longer allowed to supply spare parts or repair Russian aircraft. Russian airlines are no longer allowed to take off or land in many western countries.

As early as February, the Russian daily newspaper “Isvestia” reported that Russian airlines in particular want to service their Airbus and Boeing machines less frequently due to the restrictions. In May it was reported that the Russian state airline Aeroflot, among others, had instructed its cabin crew to ignore aircraft defects and malfunctions in certain cases.
