Strabag uses artificial intelligence on construction sites

Austria’s largest construction group Strabag has set up a “Data Science Hub” together with Microsoft: decentralized data is collected there, evaluated using algorithms and risky construction projects are identified in order to be able to take measures at an early stage. Artificial intelligence (AI) is now also being used on construction sites. This was announced in a broadcast this week. OpenAI technology is used.

Microsoft and OpenAI have been cooperating for several years. Strabag uses the technology in risk management, among other things: “By using data and AI to determine which projects pose a potential risk for us, we can save the company a lot of time and money,” says Marco Xaver Bornschlegl, responsible for innovation and digitization responsible. The effects of a project are already assessed in the early stages by comparing it with projects that have already been implemented.

The solution is also used to plan the use of cranes on construction sites: “With this solution, we know whether the weather will prevent us from using a crane on site,” says Bornschlegl.

“Generative Design” is used in the real estate development department: following just a few clicks, employees know the maximum gross floor area they can develop on a property – essential for large projects.
