It was one of the highlights of the INNtöne key festival, which was held for the first time at Paul Zauner’s Buchmannhof in the Innviertel region of Diersbach at Pentecost 2022: Enrico Pieranunzi, the 72-year-old Italian pianist grandmaster at the time of the concert on June 3 last year, who has been a crème de la crème of European jazz, captivated the audience with an excellent solo performance.
Pieranunzi, who was born in Rome and who has worked and recorded with trumpeter Chet Baker, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian over the course of his long career, offered a virtuoso, colorful cross-section of his work. He touched on well-known standards – for example in “Princes and Princesses” – and occasionally intoned touching themes of his own such as “The Heart of a Child” in order to weave all these stories into an entertaining musical tale that evening.
