MLB Network correspondent Jon Heyman reported that there are four teams bidding on Trevor Story and the star shortstop is expected to make a decision “soon.”
The Giants and Red Sox were mentioned, while the other two remain a mystery. Heyman mentions that for Story “winning is a priority” and that he would be considering a short-term transition to another position with his new team, if necessary.
That kind of move would seem necessary if the 29-year-old slugger makes a deal with Boston or San Francisco. Both teams have their own veterans and established shortstops — Xander Bogaerts and Brandon Crawford, respectively.
Story hit 24 homers with an .821 OPS last year, marking a setback compared to his production between 2016 and 2019 (31 homers per year, .878 OPS). However, its muzzle velocity and barrel rate were better than the 2020.
