Stormy night: Storm front covered all of Upper Austria

The forces were prepared for a thunderstorm. “But to this extent, we didn’t expect it,” says Martin Burger, chief fire inspector at the state fire brigade command. The storm that hit Wednesday night was “particularly extensive”. “Every district in Upper Austria was affected,” says Burger.

192 fire brigades were deployed until four in the morning. Wind, lightning strikes and downpours left their mark, and the firefighters were called to more than 400 locations within three hours. There was also a frontal truck collision in Frankenmarkt and two fires in Enns and Steyregg.

Hurricane gusts: the peaks in Upper Austria

The storm picked up the most speed in Waizenkirchen (Grieskirchen district) and Reichersberg (Ried district). Around midnight, hurricane gusts were registered at the measuring stations there. “In Waizenkirchen it was 123 km/h, in Reichersberg 121 km/h,” says Christian Resch from Geosphere Austria. But also in the other parts of the country one can speak of hurricane-like gusts. At Hörsching Airport, for example, 109 km/h were measured.

Roads blocked and roofs covered

The storm front first reached the west of the country, moving from the Innviertel through the districts of Vöcklabruck, Grieskirchen and Eferding. The Linz and Wels areas were also particularly affected. Much of the deployment was due to trees collapsing and blocking roads. In addition, the strong gusts of wind had damaged buildings: some roofs had been covered. Together with the professional fire brigade in Linz, the fire brigade in Wels and the district warning center in Ried, a large number of emergency calls have been processed, according to the state fire brigade command.

Next front in the followingnoon

Around four o’clock in the morning the storm had lost its intensity and the situation slowly eased. But even early Wednesday morning, numerous fire brigades were still busy cleaning up storm damage.

It should only be a break: the next front is already approaching in the morning. “The first thunderstorms are already falling in Vorarlberg,” says meteorologist Christian Resch at around seven in the morning. In Upper Austria he expects the first rain showers in the morning. In the followingnoon, strong thunderstorms will spread to most parts of the country, according to the Geosphere Austria forecast.
