A series of severe storms damaged homes, downed trees and caused blackouts in various parts of the southeastern United States between Saturday followingnoon and Sunday morning.
Authorities closed roads in Hazel Green, Alabama, following power lines collapsed and several homes were damaged. The Madison County Police Department posted photos of the damage online, including one of a broken utility pole.
Bad weather also damaged several businesses in Hazel Green, including a Walmart store, local press reported. The community is regarding 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of Huntsville.
The same storm system downed trees in the nearby town of Triana, regarding 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Huntsville.
Mayor Mary Caudle told WAFF-TV that regarding 280 residents sheltered from the storm at a shelter Saturday night.
The storms followed a system early Saturday that possibly caused tornadoes and flooding in parts of Kentucky.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency on Saturday due to storms in the state. So far there were no reports of injuries or deaths. The storms came just three weeks following a series of tornadoes hit the region, killing more than 90 people in five states, including 77 in Kentucky.
“It is devastating that we are once once more experiencing stormy weather just weeks following the deadly tornadoes that struck western Kentucky. Sadly, some counties have been affected by these two events, ”Beshear said in a statement Saturday.
