Saturday, 6 p.m.: Doomsday atmosphere in the Innviertel. With gusts of wind of more than 100 kilometers per hour, torrential rain, lightning and thunder, severe storms swept over Upper Austria from the west in the early evening. The huge thunderstorm cells formed in the humid and highly unstable air at the front of a cold front and put an abrupt end to what was probably the last major heat wave of this summer.

Fire brigades in continuous operation

Alarms were received every minute from 5:53 p.m. at the state fire brigade command. Due to flooding, storm damage and vehicle salvage, the volunteer fire brigades were in action around 6:30 p.m. in the Braunau district and a little later also in the Ried im Innkreis district and in the Vöcklabruck area. 81 missions by 53 fire brigades were counted around 6:45 p.m., and the trend is rising sharply. At around 7:15 p.m., 92 fire brigades were already involved in 137 operations.

The many simultaneous operations also pushed the systems of the state warning center to their limits: at peak times, so many alarms were received that even an emergency call might not get through. There were also brief malfunctions in the app.
