LONDON (AP) — Britain and Ireland braced Sunday for the impact of Storm Isha, which threatens to batter island nations with strong winds and rain.
Britain’s Met Office weather agency issued a rare warning for the entire United Kingdom, saying winds might reach 145 kilometers per hour (90 miles per hour) and threaten human lives.
“There is potential for life-threatening winds that might cause power outages, high waves in coastal areas, and debris and downed trees on roads,” said meteorologist Tom Morgan.
Parts of the United Kingdom have been hit by strong winds and rain that have downed trees, disrupted power and caused flooding in river areas. Isha is the ninth named storm since September.
Some rail companies, which have previously been hit by flooding, downed trees or landslides, planned to suspend services or warned the public regarding delays. In some cases, they asked people to make reservations for other dates.
In the west of Ireland, in counties Donegal, Galway and Mayo, authorities warned of the possibility of strong winds from Sunday followingnoon to Monday morning. The population was warned to stay away from the coasts.
