Temperature records in Bavaria
Weather expert Christian Lorenz explained in the BR that the thunderstorms in Bavaria had developed in the late followingnoon in the muggy, hot air. Temperature records had previously been measured in many places in Bavaria, for example in Wielenbach in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau with 32.6 degrees, which was a new temperature record for May for this place, but also in Eichstätt-Ladershofen, Rosenheim Augsburg, Kempten and on the Hohenpeissenberg.
More storms expected overnight
The beginning of the storm on Saturday was made by a so-called super cell in the Rhön, which moved from Oberelsbach via Ostheim in front of the Rhön in the direction of Meinigen in Thuringia. In addition to heavy rain, it also brought hail. In the further course, more and more thunderstorms developed in eastern Baden-Württemberg, which finally formed in western Central Franconia and northern Swabia to form a distinctive thunderstorm line, which extended from Uffenheim in Central Franconia in the Neustadt/Aisch-Bad Windsheim district to Nördlingen in Swabia. 20,000 flashes in 30 minutes
The line of thunderstorms on Friday then moved towards the Czech Republic at around 8:45 p.m. In their area there was sometimes large hail, sometimes more than 20,000 lightning strikes were registered in half an hour. Hurricane-like gusts of 106 km/h were measured in Wunsiedel and severe gusts of 94 km/h in Nuremberg. Heavy rain of 30 liters per square meter fell in just 20 minutes at the Nuremberg Netzstall station, which only happens regarding every five years.
In the course of the night, more showery rain and isolated strong thunderstorms must be expected, explained Lorenz, whereby the risk of severe weather is slowly decreasing.
It’s getting cooler and drier
According to the expert, cooler and, above all, drier air will flow into Bavaria on Saturday and under the increasing influence of high ZEUS, friendly and dry weather will prevail in many places. Only near the Alps will the air be wetter, with rain and isolated thunderstorms occurring until noon , before the weather improves here too. Sunday brought us mostly sunny weather throughout Bavaria under the influence of intermediate highs, individual thunderstorms in the followingnoon and evening in the Alps cannot be completely ruled out. In addition, it is no longer hot and humid, the maximum values are between 19 and 25 degrees at the weekend.
