In Bavaria, the German Weather Service (DWD) already had warned of violent hurricane gusts with wind speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour. Especially the night to Monday was stormy once more.
Due to the expected storm in parts of Bavaria, there are restrictions on train traffic in some areas. In Lower Franconia, the Westfrankenbahn has completely stopped train traffic from Sunday evening until Monday, 9 a.m. Pupils from the district of Miltenberg who cannot come to school for this reason are therefore excused. But the lesson takes place.
In the Upper Bavarian district of Pfaffenhofen, on the other hand, there is no school on Monday. The reason is the DWD’s warning of hurricane gusts, as stated in the letter from the district office. So far, Swabia, Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate have mainly reported minor storm damage. Fire brigade and rescue workers had to move out there mainly because of fallen trees.
Train customers should inform themselves before departure
Deutsche Bahn (DB) asked its passengers to find out whether the planned journey was possible. This applies in particular to commuters in rush-hour traffic. Those who can should postpone the trip. According to Deutsche Bahn, a total of more than 6,000 kilometers of the route network were temporarily unusable following the stormy days that had passed. Around 2,000 emergency services are on the move around the clock to remove fallen trees and repair overhead lines.
From Sunday evening, 9 p.m., the wind increased significantly and, according to meteorologists from the German Weather Service, moved through the country in connection with a cold front from north-west to south-east. In the meantime, there was a risk of violent storms and hurricane-force gusts with wind speeds of up to 115 km/h. “Antonia” was accompanied by heavy showers and thunderstorms.
From Monday followingnoon the weather will calm down
The cold front should then reach the foothills of the Alps in the morning. Hurricane-like gusts can still occur, especially in southern Bavaria. According to the experts, the storm situation will calm down a little by midday. “But Monday will also be a windy, stormy day with lots of rain,” explains a meteorologist. Snow falls above 400 to 600 meters. The maximum temperatures are between 5 and 11 degrees, in the mountains it stays a little cooler.
“We still have to get through the storm situation until Monday,” a DWD meteorologist in Offenbach had predicted on Sunday. The weather only calmed down in the evening. “The wind will remain an issue throughout the week,” he explained. “However, that will be a completely different house number than what we are experiencing these days.”
