Storm Louis: a driver dies in Deux-Sèvres, his car swept into a river

This Thursday, in the middle of the day, during storm Louis, a 52-year-old man died in Deux-Sèvres, his car was submerged in the Le Chambon river. This happened at Saint-Georges-de-Noisné. According to the sub-prefect of Parthenay, Lucas Turgis, who went to the scene of the tragedy, this “motorist entered a lane which was blocked to traffic”, at the locality of the Moulin des Airaudières.

This resident of the town “took the bridge which spans the river, before being swept away”specify the firefighters. “The vehicle was submerged by the Chambon, so it was a fatal traffic accident,” adds the sub-prefect of Parthenay. At that time, according to our information, the current was very strong. The motorist unfortunately might not be saved by the emergency services who came to remove the vehicle from the water.

“A large fire and gendarmerie force was engaged with quite heavy work to take charge of the vehicle in technically quite difficult circumstances,” specifies the sub-prefect of Parthenay.

Call for vigilance

The sub-prefect of Parthenay recalls that Deux-Sèvres “were on orange alert for rains and floods since Wednesday. We will soon come out of this episode on the rains and floods part. On the other hand, the risk of flooding continues since the effects of this rains risk producing overflows on the three main courses water from Deux-Sèvres: the Thouet, the Sèvre Niortaise and the Sèvre Nantaise. Lucas Turgis therefore calls on the population to be extremely vigilant in their movements and activities, as well as to respect the signs when a road is closed.

Generally, “all of Deux-Sèvres and particularly the Gâtine sector, a granite territory with flow rates which can increase very quickly due to the nature of the soil, are dangerous areas during periods of rain, also recalls the sub-prefect of Parthenay. We can let ourselves be surprised, even in places we know.”

Furthermore in the department, “at the height of the storm, around 2 p.m., 2,000 homes were deprived of electricity. 630 of them were still without electricity at 5 p.m. A return to normal is expected in the evening. One person was was also rehoused by the municipality of Saint-Maixent-L’École due to rising water levels.indicates the prefecture of Deux-Sèvres.
