Storm “Helene” in Florida: Consulate recommendations – Italia Report USA

Florida, the Consulate’s message to our fellow citizens

Florida is holding its breath for what is happening in Central America and the Gulf of Mexico. In recent days, Governor DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 41 counties in the western part of the state. What is worrying, in fact, are the storms that are moving from the Caribbean toward the Sunshine State. Storms that could strengthen and become a hurricane, hitting Florida between tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. For this reason The Italian Consulate in Miami has published some recommendations for our fellow countrymen.

“Tropical Storm Helene,” the message reads, “is moving from the Gulf of Mexico toward Cuba and is expected to strengthen and hit southwestern Florida on Thursday, September 26. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges are possible. At present, there is a risk of flash flooding localized in urban areas and, as a residual risk, also of waterways overflowing. Florida authorities have issued a declaration of a state of emergency valid for forty-one counties in the state.”

“It is recommended that our fellow citizens who are in any capacity in the areas that will be affected by the disturbances – continues the Consulate – scrupulously follow the safety instructions of the local authorities, constantly monitor the weather conditions on the website of the US Hurricane Center – (National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center) and stay informed by consulting the website Travel Safely of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, updated in real time and with content also available on app. Finally, we would like to point out that we are regularly reposting the security notices from the competent authorities on the Consulate General’s social channels.”

We also remember the channels of the FL Division of Emergency Managementwith a wealth of useful information on emergency prevention and management, starting with the one that could materialize in the next few hours.

DeSantis: “18,000 men already mobilized”

Meanwhile, the governor of the state, Ron DeSantis, has published a update on the situation. “Tropical Storm Helene, now formed, is expected to intensify,” he wrote. “As always, Florida will prepare for the worst and hope for the best. We have already mobilized nearly 18,000 linemen (with more on the way) and are ready with search and rescue and road clearing teams. Stay tuned for local and state emergency advisories and warnings. Prepare for the storm now and heed evacuation directives, if issued, from local officials.”
