Storm gusts: southern autobahn in Carinthia blocked in several places

Storms caused problems on Carinthia’s roads on Thursday followingnoon. Storm gusts knocked down trees and blocked the southern autobahn (A2) towards Italy near Griffen (Völkermarkt district).

Traffic was therefore diverted from the autobahn at Wolfsberg Süd and flowed via Packer Straße (B70). The Bad St. Leonhard driveway north of Wolfsberg was also closed due to fallen trees, police and Asfinag said.

Tunnel chain blocked

There were also problems on Thursday followingnoon at the Carinthian border with Styria. According to initial information from Asfinag, there was a power failure, which is why the Pack tunnel chain on the A2 was closed in both directions. It was initially unclear how long the lockdown would last.

In the Upper Styrian district of Liezen, the fire brigades also reported numerous operations due to storm damage: trees had fallen on roads and had blocked the traffic routes, according to the Liezen area fire brigade command. Among others, the Ennstal federal road (B320), the Schoberpassstraße (B113), the Gesäusestraße (B146) and the Pürggerstraße (L733) were affected.

The storm was particularly severe in the area between Gröbming and Treglwang or Admont, according to the fire brigades. A roof was covered in Stainach. In the followingnoon, around 150 men and women were initially on hand to help. Due to the high number of incoming emergency calls, the area warning center was manned with dispatchers as a precaution. The storm continued to the east and initially announced itself in Graz with gusts of wind.
