From Wednesday midnight and until Thursday 10 a.m., Finistère, Côtes-d’Armor and Manche will be placed on wind red vigilance, the maximum alert level, Météo-France announced in its first bulletin Wednesday morning.

The first two are also placed on orange alert for “rain-flood” and “waves-submersion”. The Channel turns orange for “waves-submersion”.

In total, seventeen departments will be placed on orange alert for waves-submersion, wind or rain-flooding, adds Météo-France.

These departments are located in an area stretching from Gironde to Hauts de France (Nord, Pas-de-Calais, Somme, Oise), via Brittany and Normandy, specifies Météo France in its bulletin published Wednesday morning.

The violent winds will be accompanied by significant precipitation “with accumulations of up to 30 to 50 mm in 6 hours in Finistère, Morbihan and Côtes d’Armor”, details the national agency.

Storm Ciaran which arrives on Thursday puts France on alert: what should we fear in Belgium?

From Wednesday evening, Ciaran, the first big storm of the fall, “will hit the tip of Brittany before midnight” with gusts of 130 to 150 km/h on the coasts and up to 130 km/h inland, explained Tuesday François Gourand, forecaster at Météo-France.

In the second part of the night, we will observe the second phase of the storm, “the strongest”, mainly over Finistère, Côtes-d’Armor then Cotentin, he said, estimating that the gusts might then reach 170 km/h on the most exposed capes.

Faced with this potentially devastating storm, the authorities have increased calls for caution.

What regarding Belgium?

Here too, we will have to be vigilant regarding this storm. The Royal Meteorological Institute also issued a yellow alert on Tuesday due to the intense winds expected across the whole of Belgium during the day on Thursday.

Gusts of south then southwest winds are expected to reach between 80 and 100 km/h. The wind intensity is expected to increase to 6 or 7 Beaufort inland and between 9 and 10 Beaufort on the coast.

During the alert phase, which runs from 4:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Thursday, the IRM invites the population to be cautious and to remain attentive to possible updates to this warning.
