KayIn this film, the story of courage, self-confidence and unity of the Malayalees was presented as a glimpse of the year 2018, which the rallyists will never forget, and the flood called Mahamari. Made on a budget of Rs 30 crore, the film collected Rs 200 crore at the box office and was well received by the audience and critics.

India’s official entry to the Oscars in the Best International Film category was 2018. Although it did not make it to the shortlist, information regarding the making of it was released on the official YouTube channel of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Director Jude Antony, producer Venu Kunnampilly, production designer Mohandas, cinematographer Akhil George and editor Chaman Chacko are the guests in the video.

Judd says that he was inspired to make the film 2018 by his own experiences. Most of the people who worked on this film were flood victims. After the water receded, I was disappointed when I went into the house and cleaned the whole place. I thought there was no more life. When I organized and read the newspapers during the flood and watched the videos of that time, I felt that this is not a story of community. No caste, no religion, no politics, only humanity. Judd explains that this is how he wanted to make this movie.

In the video, Judd shares his experience of shooting important scenes of the film, including the flood, the sea storm and the air lift. The shooting of the movie was set in a 12-acre backyard in Vaikam. The flood was filmed in a large tank built on a two-acre plot. According to Judd, the height of the houses was lowered to depict the water coming in, rather than letting more water into the tank.

Humans, not large machines, were relied upon to create the rough seas and waves. Ten to fifteen people got into the tank and shook the wires specially connected to the boat to make that effect. The art director and the director’s assistants all went into the water for it. JCB used to make huge waves.

2018 in itself is the result of hard work. He is still studying cinema. Judd added that the film 2018 and the filmmaker himself are proof that any movie lover who watches movies and studies movies can make any big movie on any big scale.
