Every year, many people try to quit smoking for good, and to help them achieve this, the World Health Organization (WHO) has launched its first smoking cessation guide.

Therefore, this set of guidelines aims to help the more than 750 million people around the world who want to quit smoking through a combination of pharmacotherapy and behavioral intervention.

“These guidelines mark a critical step in the global fight against these dangerous products. They provide countries with essential tools to effectively help consumers quit smoking and reduce the global burden of tobacco-related diseases,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press release express.

Whether it’s brief advice lasting 30 seconds to three minutes, or more in-depth behavioral support, WHO recommends that health system staff provide interventions to support people on their journey.

Additionally, digital interventions via text messages, apps or even online programs can be used in a complementary manner.

The organization estimates that more than 60% of smokers worldwide want to quit smoking, but 70% of them do not have access to effective smoking cessation services.

“Quitting smoking is a difficult struggle that should not be underestimated. We must fully consider the efforts that quit candidates must make and the pain they endure along with their loved ones to overcome this dependence,” said Rudiger K. Dr. Leitch emphasized.
