“Stop Crisis of the Reception: Activists Taking Action for Migrant Asylum Seeker Accommodation”

For these citizens in solidarity with migrant asylum seekers, this occupation is a way of accommodating homeless people, while recalling that this lack of places in the centers must be quickly remedied Fedasil, the Belgian federal agency for reception of asylum seekers.

There are still 3,000 asylum seekers who are currently sleeping outside, according to the “Stop crisis de l’accueil” collective, which comes to the aid of these people. “We need structural solutions here and now. However, the only texts on migration that are on the table absolutely do not respond to the urgency“, said the collective on Sunday.

Several activists wore masks reproducing the faces of the Prime Minister, Alexander de Croo, and the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Nicole de Moor. “The masks are to remind that it is the members of the government who should have opened new places of accommodation. But as long as the ministers do not take their responsibilities, we will do it for them. A month ago, we helped 70 people find shelter. Today we do it once more“, said Sacha of the collective “Stop crisis of the reception”.

Last March, several activists took over a building near the Brussels-North station, in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. Destined to become the future national crisis centre, the building also had a strong symbolic value. After several days of occupation by some seventy asylum seekers, a solution was found between the State and the occupants, through consultation via a justice of the peace. All asylum seekers have been rehoused by the State, in decent accommodation.

According to the collective “Stop crisis of the reception”, the measures currently proposed by the federal government will have no effect in the short term. However, Belgium is regularly condemned by various courts for non-compliance with the law on asylum. He also recalls that in September 2022, more than fifty associations signed a roadmap with many possible solutions to solve the reception crisis.
