Sliding in a different way: This is what happened at the bathtub race in Stoos (SZ) on Saturday followingnoon…

20 minutes

  • In Stoos (SZ) today people are sliding in old bathtubs.

  • Teams of at least three people slide down a slope specially created for the race in decorated tubs.

  • Sunshine, music and cheering spectators accompany the spectacle.

  • The fastest team and the three best outfits of the disguised bathtub pilots will be rewarded with prizes.

If you look out over the snow-covered landscape of Stoos on Saturday followingnoon, you will not only see skiers, but also lots of people in costumes in bathtubs. A bathtub race is taking place in the Schwyz ski destination for the tenth time. But how does such a competition actually work?

It’s simple: Teams of at least three people choose from bathtubs provided, receive their starting number and then – like in a ski race – slide down the slope that has been specially prepared for the race. The journey takes approximately one minute. There is a curve and a small jump to overcome. The aim is to be as fast as possible, not to tip over despite obstacles – and of course to have as much fun as possible. (see video above)

“Great atmosphere, great weather”

The race is completely sold out, around 130 teams compete once morest each other – and make the audience laugh with group names like “Grandma, single, looking…” and “The penguins of Madagascar”. The fastest team and the three best costumes of the costumed bathtub pilots will be rewarded with prizes in the evening. However, they have to earn it hard: each team competes in at least two races. The best will compete once morest each other once more in a final third run at 6 p.m. Don’t you run out of breath at some point?

Obviously not! With sunshine, music from DJ Mosi and applauding spectators, the race lasts the whole followingnoon. Romina (14), Sarina (15) and Leandra (15, from right to left) are taking part for the first time. “The atmosphere is super cool,” says Sarina. “The weather and temperatures are optimal, we are happy!” says Leandra. However, the group remains modest when it comes to victory: “We don’t think our chances of winning are particularly high. But that doesn’t matter, we’ll do our best!”

Lukas (19), Remo (19) and Dave (19, from left to right) also take part in the race. “We’re here to drink and act stupid,” says Dave, laughing. The group has taken part in previous years, but once the race had to be canceled due to bad weather. Not today: “There are a lot of people watching and the weather is great. It mightn’t be better,” says Remo.
