The wave of stone attacks on Medellín roads continues to generate concern and affect drivers and pedestrians, especially on Regional Avenue and Oriental Avenue. Despite recent security operations and the capture of a suspect linked to these acts, new incidents have been recorded, the most recent being last holiday Monday, when a family was the victim of an attack in the La Minorista sector.
The incident occurred when Juana Ruiz and several of her relatives were traveling along Regional Avenue. According to Ruiz’s story, they heard a loud impact on their vehicle, which he described as a “roar similar to a gunshot,” which caused panic among the occupants. The thrown stone did not go through the windshield, but left glass fragments inside the car. Fortunately, none of the passengers were injured.
This case joins a series of similar reports in recent months. Drivers and passengers traveling along Regional Avenue, the depressed area of Oriental Avenue and other nearby areas have reported these stone attacks, which in some cases lead to accidents, material damage and a growing perception of insecurity. Despite the arrests and controls implemented, the situation persists.
Attacks have become so common that citizens have begun to mobilize, calling for more police presence and rigorous control in these high-risk areas. Several victims, like Ruiz, have expressed their desire that definitive measures be taken to put an end to this problem that, in addition to physical damage and deaths, affects the peace of those who must travel these roads daily.
At the beginning of November, the Attorney General’s Office announced the capture of an alleged perpetrator, identified through security cameras, who has been linked to some of these attacks. The suspect, known by the alias “El Diablo”, was apprehended after a series of investigations based on testimonies and recordings that allowed his identification. This capture was announced as an important step in the fight against these attacks, however, it has failed to stop the reappearance of similar incidents.
The Medellín authorities have increased operations in the affected sectors, establishing patrols and surveillance at the times and points where attacks have been recorded. The Metropolitan Police has also asked for the collaboration of citizens, urging them to report any similar incident to continue identifying possible perpetrators and prevent these acts that threaten safety on the roads.
Juana Ruiz, one of the recent victims, expressed her concern and said that she knows several people who have suffered similar attacks on the same road. “It is dangerous and I hope they can put a stop to this situation,” he declared, joining the call of many other affected people who have requested an increase in police presence.
Given this situation, the Prosecutor’s Office and the Metropolitan Police have enabled several channels so that the victims of these attacks can make their complaints. Citizens can go to the headquarters of the Prosecutor’s Office in their municipality, to the Immediate Reaction Units (URI), to the Victim Assistance Center, or to the Houses of Justice to formalize their complaint. Authorities remind that any additional details, such as descriptions of the attackers or suspicious motorcycles and vehicles, may be crucial for investigations and to prevent future incidents.
