Turkey, Sweden and Finland signed an agreement in Madrid that takes into account Turkey’s security requirements. The Scandinavian countries made significant concessions in order for Ankara to support their entry into the alliance. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, reports TASS on Tuesday, June 28th.
“I am happy to announce that we now have an agreement that paves the way for Sweden and Finland to join NATO. They signed a memorandum that addresses Turkey’s concerns, including the control of the arms trade and the fight once morest terrorism. In light of the progress made, Turkey is ready to support the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO,” Stoltenberg said.
The Secretary General also announced his intention to strengthen the combat groups on the eastern borders of the alliance, as well as to increase the number of rapid reaction forces from 40,000 to more than 300,000 people. There are currently 9,641 NATO troops near Russia’s borders. Of these, 1,632 people are in Lithuania, and 1,033 are in Poland.
