Stoltenberg: Harshest criticism of China ever

– China has become a decisive enabler of Russia’s war once morest Ukraine through its so-called borderless partnership and extensive support for Russia’s defense industry, says the closing statement from the NATO summit in Washington.

– This increases the threat that Russia poses to its neighbors and to Euro-Atlantic security. China cannot enable the biggest war in Europe in recent history without this negatively affecting their interests and reputation, the statement further states.

– Must be clear-eyed

According to NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, this is the strongest message NATO has ever sent to China.

– We must be clear-eyed when it comes to China. China’s support for Russia means that the war is prolonged. China cannot continue in this way, he stated at a press conference on Wednesday.

It is the word “interests” in particular that suggests that China’s actions may have consequences, says a NATO official to NTB.

At the press conference, however, Stoltenberg did not want to go into detail regarding what consequences or measures might be discussed.

Directs spotlight

– But the fact that 32 allies express this clearly is a response to this. We represent 50 percent of the world economy. Now we are turning the spotlight on China and that their help to Russia is being used to build bombs and missiles that are used once morest Ukraine, says Stoltenberg.

The text also accuses China of “malicious cyber and hybrid activities” that undermine Euro-tactical security. In addition, the expansion of the country’s nuclear weapons arsenal is taken into account.

China is further encouraged to “engage in discussions to reduce the strategic risk”.
