LOS ANGELES, CA (3TV/CBS 5) — A stolen big rig led officers on an hours-long chase before bursting into flames in the Los Angeles area.
The big rig was stolen at a Bakersfield gas station, according to KCAL News. While the driver was filling the tank with fuel, someone hopped into the truck and drove away with it.
During the pursuit, officers with the California Highway Patrol deployed spike strips, puncturing both of the front tires, causing them to later shred off the rim and pieces of the tire to fly into the air.
KCAL News’s Desmond Shaw offers some sage advice “It would definitely be in the suspect’s best interest to give up before they get to Arizona”
With the tires completely disintegrated, the suspect had no other choice but to stop the vehicle on the side of the freeway. Aerial footage from KCAL News showed the suspect running from the cab of the truck to a nearby apartment complex, trying to escape.
Officers quickly found the suspect with the help of a police air unit and took them into custody. Meanwhile, the cab of the big rig caught fire and quickly burst into flames due to the damage caused by the suspect driving on the wheel rims.
