The Hallein Ex-Bgm. and Vice President Christian Stöckl left many traces in the city and in the country. Now he is retiring from politics. He wouldn’t do anything differently, he says in a TN conversation – apart from taking more time for the family.

Christian Stöckl would have completed his 30 years next year: in 1994 he entered politics in Hallein as a city councillor, in 1999 he won the direct election to mayor, which he remained for almost three terms (from 2009 to 2013 he was also a member of the state parliament) until Wilfried Haslauer died today 65-year-olds following the early state elections in 2013 as (among other things) finance and health officers in the state government.

“Especially the first few years were characterized by the processing of the financial cause. Thanks to his prudent policy, the state’s debt was halved and thus the finances in Salzburg stabilized,” emphasized Governor Wilfried Haslauer when he recently said goodbye to the Pongauer native Great decoration of the country awarded. In the health sector, Stöckl has ensured the maintenance of all hospitals and thus the security of supply at a high level in all districts: “He was a pioneer in Austria when it came to joint health planning for the resident and inpatient areas.”

For him, Stöckl was always a “do-it-yourselfer”: “In order to get the country’s finances back on a stable footing, some unpopular decisions were also needed. Christian Stöckl never shied away from them. It was similar in the health sector, not only but especially in the Corona crisis.”

“Despite the austerity course, we were able to invest, much progress has been made”

Stöckl, who worked as a mathematics and geography teacher at the Hallein high school before his political career, is particularly proud of the financial management of the city and country under his aegis in the TN interview: “Both in Hallein and in the country I was able to solve the desolate financial situation when I started and get both of them back on a financially stable basis. But at the same time, a lot of work went on, we invested a lot in a wide variety of areas, in Hallein for example in the new retirement home, the major renovation of the hospital, the new one Musikum etc. And the same in the country, on average we put two to three times the inflation into the health system every year.”
