Important reform projects in the judiciary are overdue

Vienna (OTS) “Minister Alma Zadić wants to distract from the standstill and undesirable developments in the Ministry of Justice. Her appearance in today’s ORF press hour has clearly shown that she has little interest in promoting meaningful reform projects. Should that change, you can be sure of the support of the People’s Party. We are ready to negotiate at any time,” says the General Secretary of the People’s Party, Christian Stocker, referring to today’s ORF press hour. “To date, the Minister of Justice has neither presented concrete proposals to strengthen the rights of the accused nor taken the necessary steps to introduce reimbursement of procedural costs in the event of acquittals. Minister Zadić should finally take action, the issue has been with the Ministry of Justice for a long time and those affected have waited long enough – decisions and solutions are needed.”

“From the point of view of the People’s Party, it remains clear: the strengthening of the accused’s rights, including reimbursement of costs in the case of acquittals, must be pushed ahead. In this context, there is nothing to avoid a ban on citing criminal files. There is also a need for an independent federal prosecutor who is subject to parliamentary control. I am glad that in Karoline Edtstadler we have a highly competent constitutional minister who rightly draws attention to this need for reform,” said Stocker, who finally emphasized: “The People’s Party has already done its part: by tightening the criminal law on corruption, the media transparency package and the Political Parties Act, important improvements have been initiated.”
