Whether in hospitals or kindergartens, retirement homes or medical practices, whether in schools or workshops, in shops or restaurants, finance, justice, infrastructure, industry: they are in demand everywhere at the moment: beings with eyes, ears, brains and hands. They are called employees, recently “employees”, workers or employees, team or staff. They are a “type of cost” in company accounting, in fact the most important and often the most expensive. Sometimes one hides part of them under the “material costs”; and quite a few like to be “outsourced”. You still have to pay for them. Here and there people are even talking regarding better wages, because their species has become rare.
What to do regarding the staff shortage? How might it get to the point where many industries are desperately looking for people, male/female/diverse*, young and old, skilled workers and executives, hands-on at all hierarchical levels? What was missed and overslept? Minimizing and “rationalizing” personnel costs – was that the dumbest idea ever?
stock up! This may be the most plausible solution and will help all those who are left in the team and (have to) do tasks for two. In thousands of companies, people complain regarding an enormous increase in workload, regarding constant pressure and stress. How to react to this: by topping up? Or continue with more machines, robots, with digitization? Or should one simply hope for the opening of the “labour market” – for immigrants, refugees, and cheap workers? stock up! Wouldn’t that be a nice utopia?
