The IEM assumes the presidency of the Observatory of Political Participation of Women
The full exercise of women’s political-electoral rights, as well as the functions corresponding to elected positions, is the greatest challenge faced by the Observatory of Women’s Political Participation, an organization that held its first ordinary session, where the Electoral Institute of Michoacán, in the presidency, was ratified.
In her speech, Elvia Higuera López, Undersecretary of Human Rights and Population of the Government Secretariat, stated that the challenge is to move towards a work agenda that leads to making visible what women suffer not only in campaigns but also in public office. .
The state official expressed that the invisibility of her functions, the refusal to deliver financial and material resources, withholding of wages, threats, bullying and harassment, are just some of the issues on which the observatory must focus its attention in order to provide the pertinent accompaniment, in order to identify them, give accompaniment and eradicate them.
“A reality that we seek to change is that it is still common for women in traditional and communal governments to be invisible,” she assured.
In this framework, the members of the Executive Committee of the Michoacán Observatory expressed their intention to contribute to the actions undertaken to guarantee the political empowerment of women.
For her part, Támara Sosa Alanís, head of the Secretariat for Substantive Equality and Development of Women, commented that achieving respect for women’s political rights is quite a challenge, “we are fully willing to work together to to make it a reality, we must make the progress we have made visible”.
During this first session, the call was also made known to people from civil society, academia, activism, the public function or the private sector, who wish to join the observatory committee, in order to contribute to the creation of proposals. , work plans and commissions.
