Still no flights to North Coast Hospital

The first fleet of flights promised by Health Minister Christian Dubé last week is still waiting on the North Shore, with Seven Islands Hospital planning another disruption to services.

Between July 6 and 9, there will be no beds for children at Seven Islands Hospital. People arriving at the emergency room will be transferred to Baicomo or elsewhere in Quebec. In the coming days, it will be the turn of newborn babies who must be kept in the hospital for observation to suffer the same fate.

“Due to a lack of nursing staff, CISSS has had to reduce certain services from July 6 to 15,” CISSS spokesperson Jean-Christophe Beaulieu said in an email.

However, Health Minister Christian Dubé promised to send reinforcements there in the form of a “flying team” of regarding 40 people.

Initially, Mr Dubé said the first teams would arrive on June 20. However, on June 19, he announced that the first team would be deployed to the North Shore next week. We understand that a week later a nurse was sent to reinforce the scene.

On Wednesday, the minister admitted on the X platform that “the delays have been too long”. So far, 28 people (20 nurses and 8 beneficiary attendants) have been recruited. The goal is to recruit 500 people.

It’s a melting pot of problems, and at the same time, it’s the patients who suffer.

To justify the delay, the ministry said “those being hired will need to consider certain personal and professional commitments before integrating the new functions” [aviser leur employeur actuel de leur départ et donner un préavis, leurs vacances prévues, etc.] ».

In a written message to Le Devoir, the ministry also said: “It is normal for this process to take several weeks.”

patients suffer

“It’s a melting pot of problems, and at the same time, it’s the patients who suffer,” lamented Dr. Youssef Ezahr, an anesthesiologist at Baiko Moleroye Hospital and chairman of the Northern Council of Doctors, Dentists and Pharmacists. road. “Normally, we in Quebec should have a fair health care system. »

He noted that regarding 60 patients have been transferred outside the region since mid-May. He said that with the interruption of new services in the seven islands, other services should be added because Le Roye Hospital “does not have the capacity” to absorb new patients. The facility’s operating rooms have been operating at 50% capacity since mid-May due to a lack of nurses.

Mr. Ezal does not expect miracles from the flying team. He likens the flying team to a “bandage” to stop bleeding. He pointed out that nurses who stay for a short period of time will not be very efficient. “They didn’t know where the equipment was, how the protocols worked. » “Once we got the new workers, we trained them, but they left. »
