Recently, late in the evening in a Berlin living room: the host, an ardent Bowie fan, plays a strangely familiar record at an advanced hour, following a glass or two of wine. And not the A-side, but directly the B-side. Familiar sounds come from the speakers. It is Suppers Readyand the record was Foxtrot von Genesis.

My personal story with one of the best progressive rock albums of all time has now matured for over twenty years. Steve Hackett As a former comrade-in-arms and preserver of the classic Genesis songs, he has a completely different approach. In time for the fiftieth anniversary of the record, the guitarist played solo pieces from over forty years of his solo career in the first part of the set.

In the second part the complete Foxtrot Album as well as a few Genesis classics on an extensive live tour, which took him and his fellow musicians to Brighton on October 9th, 2022, among other places. This evening is now in the form of the live album Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton Available on vinyl, Bluray, DVD and CD and of course digitally.

Now a Hackett live record is not uncommon. In the past, almost every tour was released on canned music, and Genesis songs were of course always included. So what should motivate the fan to put this album on their shelf, like many variations of Firth Of Fifth or Suppers Ready is it still needed?

The birthday buffet is prepared

Any variant of the titles mentioned is certainly a winner if it plays as tastefully and powerfully as is the case here. This also applies to his solo work, Ace Of Wands and Shadow of the Hierophant have the same status. The relatively new, jazzy one was also played The Devil’s Cathedral from the Surrender Of Silence Album. Maybe not yet a classic, but it still fits perfectly into the bigger picture.

And still retain the spirit of the original, as well Watcher Of The Skiesthat you HERE can hear. Time Table and Get ‘Em Out by Friday Haven’t been played very often by Hackett, so there may be a certain justification for this live disc.

A timeless classic is honored

Over a period of six years Hackett at Genesis He has appeared on six studio albums and has now largely come into his own with his Genesis Revisited shows and anniversary concerts like this one. Compared to the previous live recordings there is a change Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton nothing significantly new to discover. Apart from, of course, timeless, great progressive rock in crystal-clear sound with the necessary patina and the pleasing fact that Steve Hackett is still keen to perform live even following over fifty years.

Conclusion
Even though there is now an unmanageable amount of live recordings of Hackett and his band, that is the case Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton a nice homage to the milestone birthday of one of the most important progressive rock albums. And who would be more predestined for this than one? Steve Hackett.
