Steve Bégin has suffered his worst career overhaul in recent months, but it’s all over. The former Montreal Canadiens forward was left broke after the construction company in which he invested heavily, worth millions, collapsed in February.

Since 2013, Bégin has been a minority shareholder in Nobesco, a company based in Trois-Rivières. As of 2019, he no longer wears the hat of vice president of the company, whose president is Mario Noël. According to the documents obtained this MagazineThe former athlete’s debts exceed $5.7 million, while his assets total $1.7 million.

According to the company register, Noël and Bégin are the only shareholders. Noel has both hands on the day-to-day management of the company. Bégin only plays the role of investor.

Noel and Nobesco’s other leaders apparently encountered some pitfalls in their path before the company closed. The reviews on Google are vicious to them.

“A year of unpaid invoices,” Roger Guay wrote in 2023. I advise potential suppliers to be very careful!

“Society is built on hidden managers,” added another internet user. No one answered the phone or any emails. Paid by their client (Department of Transport) but they don’t pay subcontractors without any proof.

It has been verified that Nobesco has received at least two contracts from the Ministry of Transport in its history.

Million dollar career

Begin has played 524 games in his NHL career, including 266 with the Habs, and has accumulated nearly $7 million through contracts. In a completely transparent manner, he posted a message on his website announcing his personal bankruptcy to the public.

“I never thought I would be in a situation like this, but I’ve been dealing with it for months,” the former hockey player wrote. […] Trust is usually the foundation of all relationships.

“However, I learned the hard way that this word should never be taken for granted. On this adventure, I believed it, but unfortunately, today I live with the consequences.

He also described the experience as “very difficult, disappointing and most importantly traumatic” for him and those around him.

not the only one

Begin isn’t the first former NHL player to run into financial problems. There are countless examples. There are also current players who have made poor decisions despite making tens of millions of dollars from their contracts.

Last year, Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Robin Lehner also declared bankruptcy despite earning a staggering amount of money during his career. He owes more than $27 million to various creditors, including the NHL and his own team.

Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane was also forced to declare bankruptcy a few years ago, suffering losses of $26.8 million due to his battle with a gambling problem.

Despite signing a seven-year, $30 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012, guard Jake Johnson declared bankruptcy in 2014.
