Welterweight No. 6 Stephen Thompson is hoping to take on Nick Diaz if the former Strikeforce champion returns to competition.
Stephen Thompson hasn’t fought since suffering a second straight loss to Belal Muhammad last December. Prior to this, Wonderboy lost by decision to Gilbert Burnsat UFC 264.
A year after his last appearance, Thompson is set to return this weekend against Kevin Holland, in the main event of UFC Orlando. Although he does not take this next challenge lightly, the karateka already has an idea about the name of his future opponent.
In an interview given to Submission RadioThompson said he wanted to face legendary UFC veteran and former Strikeforce champion, Nick Diaz. The Stockton native has not returned to competition since losing by TKO to Robbie Lawler last September. However, he plans to step back into the Octagon in 2023.
“You know, I watched the Nick Diaz fight. »Thompson said. “Every time that name is mentioned, I have a smile. So, I would like that to happen now. That would be really cool. »
“So if I come in and win this fight on Saturday, my hand is up, then that’s still an option and a potential fight for me. Yes, 100%. »concluded Wonderboy about a possible future fight against the eldest of the Diaz brothers.
