Stéphanie Frappart 1st female referee to officiate a match at the World Cup

Stephanie Frappart will officiate the Costa Rica – Germany meeting on Thursday (8:00 p.m.) during the 3rd day of Group E. The 38-year-old Frenchwoman therefore becomes the first female referee to officiate a World Cup match.

First fourth referee of the Mexico – Poland and Portugal – Ghana matches during the first two days of competition, Stéphanie Frappart will lead the duel between the Ticos and the Mannschaft, which might prove decisive for qualification in the round of 16.

Stéphanie Frappart as well as the Rwandan Salima Mukansanga and the Japanese Yoshimi Yamashita are the three female referees to be among the 36 outfield referees for this World Cup, while Brazilian Neuza Back, Mexican Karen Diaz Medina and American Kathryn Nesbitt will officiate alongside 66 other assistant referees.3

Frappart had already become the first female referee in the French second division (2014), in the men’s Ligue 1 (2019), in the European Supercup (August 2019), in the Champions League (December 2020) and in the final of the Coupe de France ( May 7).
