At the age of 68, a prominent figure of the Ukrainian diaspora, Stefan Romaniv, died – the first vice-president of the World Ukrainian Congress (WUC), head of the Ukrainian community in Australia, former head of the global cordon of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (Banderivtsi), former head of the Union of Ukrainian Youth (UU) abroad .

Stefan Romanov died at the Warsaw airport, on his way to Australia from Kaunas (Lithuania), where the founding meeting of the Anti-Imperial Bloc of Peoples (ABN) was held.

Together with his wife Anastasia, Stefan Romanov raised his son Peter and daughter Teresa, as well as five grandchildren.

For services to Ukraine, he was awarded state orders and medals of Ukraine.

Stefan Romanov was born on November 12, 1955 in Melbourne, Australia.

Father Ilko Romanov is from Ternopil (arrived in Australia in 1949), mother is German from Stuttgart.

Since childhood, he attended the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in Melbourne, his native Ukrainian school, and was a member of the Union of Ukrainian Youth.

He graduated from the Pedagogical University in Melbourne, worked as a primary school teacher.

He was the head of the SUM branch in Melbourne, the Regional Board of the SUM in Australia, the head of the parish council of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Cathedral in Melbourne. He headed the parliamentary commission on multiculturalism in the state of Victoria.

He worked as the executive director of the “Community Language in Australia” organization, which is responsible for learning foreign languages ​​and preserving cultures.

The long-time head of the Ukrainian community in Victoria, head of the Ukrainian fraternal school and head of the school council, former deputy head of the World Board of SUM.

From 2008 to 2018, Stefan Romaniv was the general secretary, and on November 27, 2018, he was elected first deputy president of the World Congress of Ukrainians.

He was awarded the state awards of Ukraine and Australia, in particular the orders of Yaroslav the Wise V degree (January 22, 2022), “For Merit” I degree (August 20, 2008), “For Merit” II degree (November 29, 2007), “For Merit” III degree ( August 17, 2006).
