Steph Carrasco’s Terrifying Eye Infection: The Aggressive Bacteria that Nearly Cost Her Sight

Steph Carrasco, 25, from Cardiff, thought her itchy eyes were just irritation from her regular contact lenses. Daily Mail.

But after visiting an optometrist to examine her eye, a recruitment consultant discovered it was actually an ulcer caused by “aggressive bacteria”.

The ulcer was so severe that she needed a new corneal transplant to save her eye.

While she was “terrified” and “barely” able to see, Ms Carrasco was sent straight to a specialist eye hospital.

She spent a week in hospital, where medical staff tried to reduce the size of the ulcer, using 72 eye drops daily.

An indication that a corneal ulcer is an open sore on the cornea, which is the layer that covers the colored part of your eye.

Most of the ulcers are very serious and can cause permanent vision loss through scarring, but can usually be treated with antibiotic or antifungal eye drops, the NHS says.

However, Ms Carrasco’s ulcer would not heal, as antibacterial drops left doctors with no choice but to perform a corneal transplant to save her sight.

After three weeks, her vision has improved and it is hoped it will be fully restored by October.

When her sight returns, she will be able to return to work.
