STEM training is the beginning

While the world debates the consequences of the advance and contributions of Artificial Intelligence, one step further into the digital era, we find ourselves faced with the possibility of addressing inequalities, from the beginning of training to project a world of possibilities, building the foundations for a more equitable future, where STEM is the cornerstone of this process.

Why is STEM training essential? In English, the acronym abbreviates areas of knowledge that are fundamental for technological development: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Basic learning to be able to perform in any project linked to the IT industry.

According to UNESCO data, less than 30% of women enroll in educational areas linked to STEM. Meanwhile, it is expected that by 2050 around 75% of jobs will be associated with this knowledge. This is a projection that, if the educational disparity continues, promises to deepen – even more – the gender gap.

We are faced with training that limits the internalization of STEM from childhood. Through the disassociated construction of women in these areas, where games motivate children to develop ingenuity and analysis, promoting skills. Meanwhile, inspiring figures in these areas are absent for girls, either through play or through leaders in decisive positions that motivate interest in careers related to the industry.

Although we are facing the slow and progressive growth of a greater female presence in technology offices, this alone is not enough if organizations maintain the status quo and do not change. The dynamics and ways of doing things must be rethought, reviewing how gender inequalities are being reproduced in the market, even without premeditating it.

The formation of plural and diverse teams, with different views and ways of thinking, represents a good in itself. An enriching potential that provides creativity and innovation, something that the industry permanently needs to enrich the demands of technological development.

We are faced with the urgency of addressing inequalities from the beginning of training, something that might put an end to this gap – or deepen it – even more if we do not address the opportunities that we can generate from the seedbed to reverse inequalities.
