This is an announcement that really doesn’t pass muster on the other side of the Alps. Sunday, December 3, Aleksandar Vucic, the Serbian president, took advantage of the official visit of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the country to reveal that the factory owned by Stellantis in Kragujevac (in the center of the country) would produce the future Fiat Panda electric. Nearly 190 million euros have been invested there to modernize the production lines and make it a major hub for the manufacturing of electric vehicles in Europe. Announced at less than 25,000 euros, the future electric Fiat Panda is intended to be affordable, like its cousin the future Citroën e-C3.
The reaction of Italian automobile unions was immediate. “This is an unacceptable decision which we will oppose by all means because we are not affecting the workers of Pomigliano” warned the Italian Federation of Metalworkers (Fiom-Cgil). Manufactured in Italy since 1980, successive generations of Fiat Panda have been manufactured by various Fiat factories such as Mirafiori (near Turin) or Desio (Lombardy).
