How does Stella Muižniece balance the practical and artistic aspects of her porcelain work?
Archyde Exclusive: An interview with Porcelain Maestro Stella Muižniece
Archyde: Welcome, Stella Muižniece, to this exclusive interview. Yoru upcoming exhibition, “Meeting,” promises to be a stunning display of your porcelain artistry. Could you tell our readers more about the inspiration behind this series?
Stella Muižniece: Thank you for having me.The inspiration behind “Meeting” is indeed the combination of the practical and the artistic, both of which have always been integral to my creative process. I believe art should not only be admired but also be an integral part of our everyday lives. Each piece in the series, whether itS a teacup, a plate, or a decorative object, serves a functional purpose while offering a glimpse into my creative world.
archyde: Your journey into porcelain painting began quite serendipitously. can you share that story with our readers?
Stella Muižniece: (Laughs) Absolutely. It all started in 1994 when I was working on an interior design project. There was a need for custom-painted porcelain, but I couldn’t find exactly what I envisioned. In a way, that was a lucky impasse, as it led me to take matters into my own hands. I decided to create the porcelain pieces myself, merging my love for both the practical and the gorgeous. And here I am, nearly three decades later, still painting porcelain.
Archyde: Your creative process is a stunning dance between careful selection and spontaneous expression. could you walk us through your creative journey for a single piece?
Stella Muižniece: Certainly. It starts with selecting the right pieces – the shapes, the sizes, the textures. I look for white porcelain dishes that speak to me, that I feel could become a canvas for my art. Than, I begin painting on the bisqueware using overglaze colors. This part is a bit like dancing, as you mentioned. It’s a balance between what I’ve premeditated and what feels right in the moment. After that, the piece goes through multiple firings at varying temperatures, which is when the true colors are revealed. It’s a meticulous process, but the result is always magical.
Archyde: The firing process plays a crucial role in your work. How would you describe this magical transformation that happens in the kiln?
Stella Muižniece: It’s truly transformative. Porcelain,in a way,is—or rather, becomes—like a canvas under fire. The high temperatures bring out the vibrancy and richness of the overglaze colors. The multiple firings are not just about firing the piece to the right temperature, but also about allowing the piece to tell its story through the colors. It’s a dialog between the artist and the kiln, and the result is always a unique, captivating narrative.
Archyde: For artists who might be inspired by your work, what advice would you offer?
Stella Muižniece: I would advise them to follow their passion, to always be true to their artistic voices, and to never stop learning. Also, I would say, find the balance between the practical and the artistic. Make your art functional, make it a part of everyday life. That, in itself, is a form of expression and storytelling.
Archyde: Stella, thank you so much for joining us today and sharing your artistic journey with our readers. We’re all excited to see “Meeting” come to life at gallery “Roman Garden.”
Stella Muižniece: My pleasure. I look forward to having you all “Meet” my art in Liepāja.
