Stefano d’Arrigo was born in 1919 and died in 1992. After literary studies in Messina, he moved to Rome in 1946. Journalist, art critic, he met intellectuals and artists there, and published a collection of poems, Codice siciliano, in 1957 (All’insegna del Pesce D’oro, Milan) which received the Crotone prize.

From 1956, he devoted himself to writing Horcynus Orca, which occupied him for twenty years. The work, an extract of which appeared in Il Menabò, the review by Italo Calvino and Elio Vittorini, received the Cino del Duca prize before appearing in 1975 (Mondadori), and attracted the attention of critics and writers, such as Pasolini, Primo Levi, George Steiner, etc. His second novel, Cima delle nobildonne (Woman by magictranslated by René de Ceccaty, Denoël, 1986), was published in 1985 (Rizzoli).

Horcynus Orca, translated by Monique Baccelli and Antonio Werli, appears in its entirety in French for the first time in 2023. Monique Baccelli, doctor of Italian letters, has, among many authors, translated Beppe Fenoglio and Giacomo Leopardi. Antonio Werli is a literary editor (Quidam, Cheyne), translator from Italian and Spanish, co-founder of the Fric Frac Club.
