Material prices today January 20: Construction iron and steel prices today on the Shanghai Exchange
Steel price today delivered in May 2023 on the Shanghai Exchange fell 12 yuan to 4,168 yuan / ton.
Steel prices for October delivery in October 2023 on the Shanghai Exchange fell 8 yuan to 4,118 yuan / ton.
Regarding the Chinese market in particular, the Center for Analysis and Investment Advice of SSI Securities JSC (SSI Research) believes that steel prices may be less volatile in 2023 due to stable Chinese demand.
After a 2-4% decline in 2022, China’s demand is expected to remain flat or recover slightly between 1-2% in 2023, which is fueled by the reopening in the months the begin of the year.
Demand in the Chinese market is likely to remain weak but will be supported by recent government measures to address liquidity problems among property and infrastructure investors. Besides, steel output of the world’s largest manufacturers also declined as mills had to cut output following a long period of losses.
After reaching a peak in May 2022 at 96.6 million tons, China’s steel output gradually declined to 74.5 million tons in November, causing a balance between supply and demand. These factors may help regional steel prices to be more stable in 2023.
However, SSI Research thinks it is unlikely that steel prices will increase sharply, as the reopening in China will also lead to increased supply. In addition, the current price level is already 20-40% higher than the pre-Covid-19 level.
Meanwhile, exports to Vietnam’s longtime trading partners might also be affected by capacity increases in recent years in neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
SSI Research forecasts finished steel exports may fall by more than 10% year-on-year in 2023. Corporate profits may recover from 2022 but risks remain high: Steel and raw material prices stable More stability can help stabilize the profits of steel companies in 2023.
On January 6, the domestic steel market had a price adjustment with the CB240 coil line. In this adjustment, Hoa Phat Steel sharply increased the price of CB240 coils by 200 dong, to 14,940 dong/kg in the northern market. After a period of stability, steel enterprises adjusted once more, this is the first price adjustment in 2023. By the end of 2022, many brands have adjusted prices several times.
The steel market is waiting for positive signals in the beginning of 2023 because it is customary for this to be the period when steel demand increases when construction works rush to speed up progress.
The Vietnam Steel Association (VSA) said that whether steel demand this year can increase strongly or not still depends on many factors, especially when steel inventories of domestic enterprises are still high, manufacturers takes time to process.
According to the Vietnam Steel Association, the steel industry has experienced a difficult year in 2022, the production of finished steel products reached 29.3 million tons, down 12% and the sales of all kinds of steel reached 27.3 million tons, down 7 percent. % compared to 2021.
