Steamthe client and store for PC games from Valve, presented an ambitious update to its interface, the most significant to date. However, users were quick to express their discontent, questioning that it now requires twice as much RAM.
The ‘patch’ brings several changes that had been tested for months in the Beta version of Steam and now reach the stable version of the program. These mandatory changes include screenshot management improvements, a new interface design, and a change in the notifications menu, among others.
As the developers indicate in a post on the platform’s official site, “the new features and improvements mentioned above represent our latest effort to continuously improve the Steam experience.”
However, users accuse that this “new Steam” now consumes more than double the RAM of the previous version. Although the changes that Valve has applied are mostly cosmetic, there are several implementations and features that would be causing this problem, even in the background.
Among the players who have detected the increase in RAM memory is Roberto Sole, responsible for the content of the medium Hardzone who tells in an article that following updating automatically, he did not feel that Steam generated any significant change in the performance of his PC.
However, when checking the Windows Task Manager for other reasons, he realized that the consumption of RAM memory on his computer was abnormal, finding that it was Steam’s fault.
According to his account, before the update, Valve’s software consumed less than 400 MB of RAM, but following it was automatically updated, this consumption rose to more than 600 MB. And since he did not have captures of the average consumption of the previous version, he asked a colleague who had Steam open without updating, to review, seeing that the consumption is 375 MB and following the update, almost 600 MB.
Other users have claimed the same and even giving even higher numbers, responding to Steam’s Twitter post announcing the update, saying that Steam “uses 700MB without even actively seeing it. And it takes up to 1 GB of ram while gaming. Bro that’s not right going from the old client’s 160mb to 1GB. It’s absolutely crazy!”
These numbers, Tarreo notes, are significant for casual users without a computer designed to suit the most demanding video games. One of the first solutions they propose is to not allow Steam to open automatically when you log into Windows and restart, or increase the PC’s RAM.
