Steam Adds New Policy to Prevent Reckless Fake Discounts

The Steam Store is one of the largest PC platforms for gamers to purchase games, and is de facto one of the best PC gaming platforms, offering tens of thousands of titles and interconnectivity between many services.

In particular, Steam can purchase games at a cheaper price through discounts, but there are cases where developers use this discount as a fake to decorate the game as if it is buying at a cheaper price and abuse the purchase inducement.

A typical example is to raise the price of the game more than usual before the big sale period, and then decorate it as if it is conducting a big sale as the sale period enters.

Valve said a new discount policy targeting these so-called fake deals will go into effect in March.

For some of the policies scheduled to be applied from March 28, launch discounts are possible, but if they end following that, separate discounts are not available for 28 days. Participation in the season discount event is not possible within 28 days of the title release or within 28 days following the release discount ends.

It is known that this rule does not apply to Steam’s four annual sales, Lunar New Year, Summer, Fall, and Winter sales.

This change seems to be Steem’s refinement of policies for more transparent store operation, and although it may feel a bit strict from the developer’s point of view, it seems to be a welcome policy from the consumer’s point of view.
