After the exposure, it went viral on the Internet and caused heated discussions.
On December 9, a screenshot of a document with the official seal of Guangxi Maternal and Child Health Hospital titled “Decision on Dismissing Zhou Xiang from the Child Health Department and Developmental Behavior Pediatric Department” was circulated on social media. The content of this document shows that Guangxi Zhou Xiang, the deputy chief physician of the Children’s Health Department of the Maternal and Child Health Hospital, concealed the truth regarding the “twins” from the mothers and their families, and planned to secretly sell one of the babies to others following giving birth. He was convicted of child trafficking. The staff of the Nanning Intermediate People’s Court confirmed that the case did exist, and the staff of the Guangxi Maternal and Child Health Hospital also pointed out that Zhou Xiang hadn’t come to work for several months.
The content of the expulsion decision shows that Zhou Xiang (born in 1971), the deputy chief physician of the Child Health Department of Guangxi Maternal and Child Health Hospital, and others have been engaged in illegal surrogacy business activities in Nanning since 2019. Zhou Xiang concealed the truth regarding the “twins” from the mother and her family by modifying the results of the ultrasound. She planned to secretly sell one of the babies to others following giving birth, and had already collected a deposit from others to buy the baby.
Zhou Xiang and others stole infants and young children for the purpose of selling them, and their behavior constituted the crime of child abduction and trafficking. On April 14, 2022, the People’s Court of Xingning District, Nanning City, Guangxi sentenced Zhou Xiang to 6 years’ imprisonment, a fine of 20,000 yuan (RMB, the same below), and recovered 70,000 yuan of illegal gains. On October 23, 2022, the Nanning Intermediate People’s Court rejected Zhou Xiang’s appeal and upheld the original judgment.
After the news was exposed, it immediately caused heated discussions. Netizens left messages, “Needless to say, it must be a crime. When the child was born, there were several doctors and nurses.
