The Afsca issues several recommendations if you plan to go on vacation with your pet. Indeed, the “most deadly virus in the world for humans and animals” is still very widespread: rabies.
This disease, which is transmitted to humans by dogs, is still present in several tourist destinations, such as Romania or Turkey, where 79 outbreaks have been detected. “Every year, rabies kills up to 60,000 people worldwide. 40% of victims bitten by rabid animals are children under the age of 15. What Belgians sometimes forget is that rabies is still present in popular holiday destinations such as Turkey or North Africa,” says Afsca spokesperson Aline Van den Broeck.
It is therefore advisable to remain cautious if you want to pet a dog in the street, especially since rabies has no apparent symptoms. And even before the appearance of these symptoms, the animal can be contagious.
Increased salivation, aggressiveness, paralysis, fever, headache or loss of appetite are signs of rabies infection. There is no cure, so the outcome is fatal.
The Afsca therefore advises animal owners to have them vaccinated before going abroad. An animal that is not properly vaccinated might be refused at the border.
