“They were very lucky” – injured Böötler were flushed under this water roller at the Reuss weir

There was an incident involving several rubber boats on the Reuss. The police urge caution.

The weather is nice, the Reuss invites you to go boating. These days, many are drifting down the Reuss in their own rubber boat. That can also be dangerous. Recently, three rubber boats got caught in the CKW weir in Rathausen. Two people were able to save themselves on the weir, two more people were flushed under the weir. They were in the Reuss when the police arrived on site. “With a lot of luck, they only suffered a few abrasions,” writes the Lucerne police on Facebook. The police were able to bring everyone back to shore.

Rubber boat accidents do not always end lightly. Two years ago, a rubber dinghy capsized in the Reuss near Windisch. A 7-year-old girl was killed. And three years ago, near Buchrain, a man fell from a rubber boat into the water and later died in the hospital.

Again and once more incidents with bathers and boats at Reuss weirs – that’s why a ban was introduced in 2016

In 2016, the canton of Lucerne also issued a bathing ban in the areas of the weir systems in the city, in town halls and at Perlen, because there is a danger to life there. The explicit ban also prevents possible claims for damages, it was said at the time. The Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke (CKW) submitted an application for the bathing ban in 2013. In the past there have been several incidents involving bathers and boats.

Currently, also on Reuss Landscape Park worked, which also deals with water use by Böötler. “Swimming on the Reuss or -Böötle are popular activities that have also become well established in recent years. Accordingly, safety precautions are indispensable, both in the water and on land,” says the concept. Danger zones and routes for Böötler are also shown there.. (rem/mme)

The behavior tips of the Lucerne police for Böötler in the overview

Explore unfamiliar river sections before the trip. Initiate the exit from the water in good time. Wear a life jacket in the rubber boat. Do not exceed the payload. Do not tie boats together and no lines in the water. Write your name and address on the rubber boat. The colder the water, the shorter the stay. Refrain from alcohol.
