Saudi Health calls on pilgrims to stay away from long standing under the sun

More than 1.8 million pilgrims participated in the Hajj season 2023, in light of the high temperatures that reached 48 degrees Celsius, which led to the injury of regarding 2,000 people with heat exhaustion, including regarding 1,721 pilgrims who were injured Thursday, according to what the Saudi Ministry of Health announced.

And the Saudi Ministry of Health stated, in a statement, that heat exhaustion centers in all hospitals in Makkah Al-Mukarramah and the holy sites are witnessing a steady increase in the number of heat exhaustion and heatstroke injuries, as a result of high temperatures.

The ministry added that its crews have dealt with more than 6,500 cases of heat exhaustion among pilgrims since the beginning of the season, bringing the total number of cases of heat exhaustion to more than 8,000.

With regard to the number of deaths among pilgrims, it amounted to at least 30 deaths, according to figures announced by several countries without indicating the cause of death, while Saudi health did not announce the death toll among pilgrims this year.

The Republic of Iran announced the death of the 114-year-old largest pilgrim from a heart attack, before announcing 10 deaths among Iranian pilgrims.

The ministry called on pilgrims to avoid standing for long periods of time in the sun, to always use an umbrella, and to drink plenty of water.
