“It comes with the snow and the cold. The viruses are on our doorstep and will circulate well during the holiday season,” warned the family doctor at the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS, Dr. Benoit Heppell in the Noovo Info Estrie bulletin.

This year, there is an increase in respiratory illnesses. But, this does not prevent the presence of COVID-19 and influenza, in particular, within the population.

“It’s a winter year like any other. We had lost the habit of it a little with COVID, confinement and masks,” said Dr. Heppell. “Both in family doctors’ offices and in hospitals, we see that respiratory viruses circulate a lot. [Il y a] cases of COVID-19, more and more cases of influenza too, […] of RSV in children and countless viruses and batteries including streptococcal pharyngitis.

Earlier this week, Health Minister Christian Dubé recommended avoiding emergencies if possible in the coming weeks.

However, Dr. Heppell wanted to reassure the population regarding the provision of services in hospitals, despite the holidays and the strike in the public sector.

“There are services that will not modulate and that you should never worry that they will stop, including emergencies and the most urgent services. […] If you have to consult for an urgent reason, the emergency services will continue to operate at full capacity,” he said on our airwaves.
